Crash course: weekend in Austin.

Tips for an Epic Weekend in Austin, Tx

Like the rest of the Austin population, we at Blackhawk were so disappointed about the cancellation of SXSW. While it’s a necessary measure, we know our favorite Austin businesses need a little extra love this month!

We’ve told you about our favorite nature spots, and now it’s time for the next best thing: food, drinks, & shopping.

So if you’re still visiting the Live Music Capital next week, here are some of our very favorite local gems that you must check out.

South Congress Ave.

You can’t go wrong spending a day along Congress Ave. From the Capitol of Texas all the way down to the iconic South Congress or SoCo, as we call it, you’ll have so much to do.

From the most upscale sushi restaurant in Austin (Otoko) to funky-cool shops (Lucy In Disguise, STAG Provisions, Maufrais), there’s something for everyone on this dynamic street.

Be sure to grab a margarita at Guero’s and stay for some live music, and then pop into the Austin Motel gift shop for a quirky souvenir.

When you’re ready to eat, try Perla’s, JoAnn’s Fine Foods, Hopdoddy, or Homeslice. And before you leave, accept the fact that you’re a tourist and get a snap in front of the iconic “I love you so much” sign at Jo’s Coffee.

Tex-Mex

Now let’s discuss something important: Tex-Mex. Matt’s El Rancho on S Lamar is home to what some might call the greatest queso of all time. We highly recommend going for a late lunch to beat the crowds – order a Bob Armstrong dip and a Knockout and you’ll be perfectly content.

Close contenders include Fresa’s (a lighter, healthier take on tex-mex), Baby A’s (try the purple margarita if you’re brave) and for a more upscale choice, Fonda San Miguel (Obama ate there!).

Now tacos. If you’re just wanting to grab a quick to-go bite, think Texas Honey Ham, Taco Joint or Veracruz.

Nightlife

Nightlife time. Austin is known for its live music and nightlife scene for good reason. For the pre-game, try tequila tastings at Whisler’s or beers and ping pong at Easy Tiger. Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar is a MUST on East 6th Street, rightfully known as “Dirty Sixth.”

For a more modern ambience, pop down to Green Light Social on West 6th (the alcoholic Capri-Sun is a must-try), or head over to Rainey Street.

If you want to hang with the true Austinites, check out Deep Eddy Cabaret, Donn’s Depot (both are classic Austin dive bars) or The White Horse to see professional two steppers.

Sunday Scaries? Not here!

Now we’ve gotten to Sunday morning. Yikes. To keep the scaries at bay, stand-up paddle board on Lady Bird Lake and cool off in Deep Eddy Pool, or check out any of our other favorite nature spots in ATX. After, Juiceland for smoothies and a wheatgrass shot if you dare!

Enjoy your weekend! Let us know what you did, or what we missed on our list!
